Differences between the movie and book: Shawshank Redemption

Books that are made into movies are always changed, even if they are minor changes, but changes are made nonetheless.  There were only a few minor changes made in the process from making the book into a motion picture film.  When this book was made into a film, the plot and overall idea/ message of the movie remained the same.  The movie version changed its name from the book version Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption to Shawshank Redemption.  In both versions, Rita Hayworth has very little to do with the story in the scheme of things, so this is why it was probably removed.

One of the minor changes that occured in the translation from book to movie was that the lead guards come and go in the book version, but Byron Hadley is the lead guard until the very end in the movie version.
  Also, in the film, Norton is the warden the entire duration, but in the novel there are 2 other wardens prior to Norton.The director of the movie probably did this so that the audience would not have to keep learning who the new characters were.  In both,  Warden Norton has embezzles hundreds of thousands of dollars. However,  in the novel, Norton quietly resigns after Andy escapes whereas,  in the film, when Andy escapes and makes Norton's crimes known, Norton commits suicide in his office rather than allow himself to be arrested.

There are no changes to the setting and theme to the story.  Some more minor details that are changed are that  in the book Andy goes through two rock hammers while making his hole. He only uses one in the movie. In the novel,  Andy did not steal warden Nortons shoes and clothes in the novel, and he did not ask Heywood for a line of rope.  However, in the movie Andy did do these things.

The endings in book and movie were changed up some the book ends with Red en route to find Andy in Mexico but not sure that he will, ending with the words "I hope." The movie shows Red finding Andy on the beach in Mexico.  This final scene in the movie shows that Red meets up with Andy.  This never happens in the book. 

Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption

Plot/ Setting-  There is an intricate plot in this story.  The story takes place in     The main characters are Red (the narrator) and Andy.  It is a story within a story ( Red tells the story).   Both of these characters are in prison for murder.  Red admitted to killing his wife, neighbor, and his neighbors newborn child by cutting the brakes of his wifes car.  Andy maintains his innocence but is charged as guilty for the murder of his wife and his wifes lover, who happens to be a professional tennis player by the name of Glenn Quentin.  Andy is initiated roughly into prison, he gets brutally raped many times by a group of guys called the "Sisters".  When Andy first arrives to prison, he becomes friends with Red because Red knows how to smuggle just about anything into prison.  Andy asks Red for a rock hammer, a pin up of Rita Hayworth, and polishing clothes.  These men remain friends, then end up working on the same work crew a few years later.  While on this work crew, Andy overhears a guard named Byron Hadley talking to another guard about what he should do to avoid having to pay taxes on an inheritance.  Andy tells the guard that he should give the money as a gift to his wife and in exchange for some alcohol he will give him future financial help.  The Warden later is informed of Andys' financial intelligence and tells Andy that he will protect him from the Sisters if he does financial work for him.
Andy does some basic financial work for awhile, then begins to launder money for the warden and other high ranking workers of the prison.  Some time later a man named Tommy Williams arrives at Shawshank prison and tells Andy that he served time in another prison with , a man who  admitted to killing tennis pro Glenn Quentin. When Andy asks the warden  to request a retrial, the warden refuses the request and transfers Tommy to another prison.  The warden does this because he fears that Andy will expose the wardens money laundering operation if he was parolled.  As some time passes, Andy tells Red that he has over 370,000 $ invested in a lock box at a bank near Shawshank prison under a false identity of his.  The key to the lockbox is hidden under a volcanic rock near the prison.  Andy tells Red this in case he is ever parolled, so that Red can get the money and meet up with Andy.  This is just what happens at the end of the story.  One day Andys cell is empty and when everything is searched a hole is found through the concrete wall that leads out of the prison.  The hole is found underneath the Rita Hayworth pin up poster.  Andy is never found, and Red is let out on parol and they meet up.

Point of View- This story is told in first person by Red, he narrates the story.  Since this story is from the view point if Reds, some details are left out, but all in all, he paints a vivid picture and is very good at making the reader feel engaged in the story.  Red switches from telling his life story to telling the reader about Andy throughout the story.  He wants to inform the reader about the man who changed his life (Andy).

Characterization- Red says this of Andy after he negotiates with the guard to get alcohol for the whole working crew for financial help, " All I know for sure is that Andy Dufresne wasn’t much like me or anyone else I ever knew. . . . It was a kind of inner light he carried around with him."(48).  Andy did not even drink alcohol, but this quote shows the reader how much Andy stood out from the rest of the prisoners.  He was a special guy and should not be in prison.

At the end of the story, Red says  "I hope Andy is down there.  I hope I can make it across the border. I hope to see my friend and shake his hand.  I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams.  I hope" (107).  This quote shows how much Andy has impacted Reds life.  Andy gives Red hope to be able to be free from prison, something he can not even fathom.

Theme-  A big re occouring theme in this short story is the power of hope.  Since prison life is so tough, prisoners must have hope to keep going.  This short story also shows how hope can spread from one person to many.  The pinup poster of Rita Hayworth represent the outside world, and every inmate’s desire to escape to a normal life. At the end of the story, Red gets a new perspective on life when he realizes that he can be free, having hope caused this new perspective.

Sonnet 29-William Shakespeare

The sonnet is about a man that is depressed because he is lonely.  In the sonnet he says, "I all alone beweep my outcast state." (line 2).  He feels sorry for himself.  He says, "And look upon myself and curse my fate" in line 4.  He then begins to talk about how he wishes that he was someone else.  "Wishing me like to one more rich in hope, featur'd like him, like him with friends possess'd, desiring this mans art and that man's scope" (lines 5-7).  The resolution on the poem is that the man thinks of his love and everything is alright.  "Haply I think on thee, and then my state, like to the lark at break of day arising from sullen earth, sings hymns at heavens gate" (lines 10-12). He says that her love is wealth to him. "for thy sweet love rememb'red such wealth brings" (lines 13).

This Sonnet's message is true.  Everyone has been in love before, so a large amount of people would agree. 
If you can remember to the time you were in love, even if something really bad just happened, if you think of your love you know that everything will be alright.  You know that they will comfort you and that they care for you deeply.  The point that I am trying to make is that everyone can relate to this poem.  Even though this poem is a few hundread years old, the feeling of love has remained the same throughout all of time. 

Ballad

The song "Fields of Atherny" by Dropkick Murphys is a ballad for many reasons.  One reason that it is a ballad is because it involves heroic deeds and murderous acts and desire for revenge.  This song is refering to the Great Irish Famine (1845-1850).  It is about a fictional man named Michael from Atherny in county galway, Ireland, who has been sentenced to be transported to Botnay Bay, Australia, for stealing food for his starving family.  This period of time was when Ireland was under control by the British.  The British transported criminals to Australia as punisment as a colony.  These criminals would never see their friends or loved ones again.  Thus, hatred for the English became an epidemic in Ireland.   

Hero

It is human nature for people to look up to another person that they would like to be like.  This person usually resembles one or more of the following heroic traits: strength, leadership, intelligence, or courage.  These character traits seem to be the most commonly refered to when describing a hero.  Three heros that I have are Aragon from Lord of the Rings, the president Andrew Jackson, and my grandma.

Aragon is a hero to me because he represents what a how an ideal hero should act.  He leads armies into battle with no fear.  He is an excellent fighter.  He always says the right things at the right time.  He later becomes the king of all of middle earth.  So others obviously feel stongly about him as well.

Andrew Jackson is another one of my heros because he is my favorite president.  He always put the common man above the rich and powerful.  A president should be a natural leader, which Jackson was.  He led the seige on the British blockade at the port of New Orleans at the end of the war of 1812 and won.  To me he represents an american.

My biggest hero is my grandma.  She is no longer on this earth but her memories are with me on a daily basis.  She is the nicest women that ive ever know.  She was a whole hearted Catholic. She donated tens of thousands of dollars to her church and also a pricelesss amount of money through her volunteer work. She fought through colon cancer, broken bones and alzheimers. She is my hero.
